Aerosols are suspended particulates in the atmosphere and have implications for climate and health through different mechanisms. Several studies have suggested that aerosols may be mitigating global warming by increasing the planetary albedo, although the sign and magnitude of aerosol effects on climate are still uncertain as outlined in the International Panel of Climate change (IPCC) reports. Compounding to the complexity of this problem is the interaction of aerosols with clouds. Aerosols change cloud properties, alter precipitation patterns and have serious consequences for altering the hydrological balance of the earth-atmosphere system. Given this background, it is imperative that aerosol measurements from space, ground and aircraft are performed carefully to answer crucial questions related to climate change. An Aerosol Climate Observatory (ACO) was set up at Bangalore in 2001 with a number of sophisticated instruments for the measurements of various parameters related to aerosols as well as radiation with an objective to characterize aerosols over this region and to assess its radiative impact. The instruments set up include the following and the parameter measured is provided inside brackets.

  1. Multi-Wavelength solar Radiometer (spectral optical depth)
  2. Aethalometer (Aerosol black carbon)
  3. Micro-pulse LIDAR (Aerosol vertical distribution)
  4. Optical particle counter (aerosol size distribution)
  5. High-volume aerosol sampler (aerosol chemical composition)
  6. Sky-scanning radiometer (sky radiance)
  7. Shadow-band radiometer (direct, diffuse and global radiation)
  8. Three-wavelength Nephelometer (spectral scattering coefficient)
  9. Automatic Weather Station (meteorological parameters)
  10. Interferometer(Refractive index of aerosol
  11. Microtops(Aerosol Optical Depth)
  12. Particle Into Liquid Sampler(ionic composition of the aerosols)
  13. Dust Monitor
  14. GRIMM
  15. Polarizer

A similar observatory was set up at Minicoy island of Lakshadeep group of islands using a sub set of the above instruments. In addition to these two fixed observatories, for characterizing aerosol spatial heterogeneity, aerosol measurements were made using identical or nearly identical instruments, carried in several instrumented mobile platforms. Over ocean aerosol measurements were carried out onboard R/V Sagar Kanya (of Department of Ocean Development). Vertical distribution of aerosol properties were characterised by mounting a micro pulse lidar (MPL) onboard a research aircraft (of Department of Space) and by making measurements over continental and coastal India as well as over oceanic regions adjacent to Indian sub continent.

Research Supervision

Two students completed doctoral degree (PhD) under Prof. Satheesh's supervision and are currently pursuing post doctoral research at University of Hampton, USA and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), USA respectively. Four PhD students are currently doing PhD under his supervision. Five students completed M.Sc (Engg) degree and are pursuing PhD abroad including one student at Harward University. In addition, more than 20 students carried out B.E./B.S./B.Tech/M.Sc./M.Tech projects in this lab under the supervision of Prof. Satheesh. Prof. Satheesh has conducted several training programs to provide training on aerosols and radiative transfer models to PhD students in various institutions/Universities in India. Several of these students later became reputed scientists in aerosol and its impact assessment using raditive transfer models. Prof. Satheesh organised two training programs on satellite remote sensing jointly with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), where scientists from ISRO and NASA provided training on satellite remote sensing to PhD students, young scientists and University lecturers
